While wrapping up a long day kayak fishing near Vancouver Island, kayak angler Kyle Borkes had one last catch in store for him– a new friend. In an adorable moment caught on camera, a sea otter decided to take a nap on Kyle’s fishing kayak.

Sea otter naps on fisherman’s kayak

Kyle Borkes is a kayak angler and one half of the KC Kayak Fishing husband and wife team, Kyle and Crystal Borkes. The duo are saltwater kayak fishing enthusiasts, based in Nananaimo, British Columbia. While generally the pair share kayak fishing content featuring fish, this sea otter had a different plan for Kyle.

“That’s like 400 bucks that you’re eating,” Kyle reasoned with the sea otter who had boarded his kayak. The otter continued nibbling on his rods and fishing gear.

“You’re a menace,” added Kyle, deciding to name the otter Dennis.

“You’re not staying here forever,” Kyle cautioned Dennis. Dennis the sea otter promptly got cozy and settled in for a nap.

The video shows Kyle making his way back to shore, where Dennis the sea otter is rousted from his nap by a wave to the face and swims back out to sea. While the cuts and timeline of the viral video make it appear as if Dennis hopped on Kyle’s fishing kayak on shore and accompanied him out to sea, the Borkes’ explain events further in the caption.

The Borkes’ emphasized that Kyle didn’t take Dennis out to sea from shore, rather Dennis hopped into the kayak when Kyle had finished fishing. The Borkes’ also emphasized that like all marine wildlife, sea otters should be avoided and given a respectful distance both for your safety as well as the otters.

“Kyle tried for 20 minutes to get him out of the kayak, after all attempts failed he went to shore where Dennis hopped out after the kayak was beached,” wrote the Borkes.
