For a complete storage solution, the Gear Hub is a pre-fab gear crate with four molded rod holders and integrated bungees to secure my fishing rods. The 14- by 14-inch crate has rubber pads on the button to prevent the crate from sliding on the deck.

The sides of the crate have slots to accommodate gear tracks so I can add any rod holder, camera mount or other accessories with a T-bolt. The crate is light, compact and easy to move from the kayak to my car between trips.

To add more versatility to the Gear Hub, Railblaza designed an insulated bag that fits inside the crate. I can use the bag as a soft cooler or live well with a battery-powered aerator without taking up more space in the kayak. And, it’s easy to go from one application to the other to meet my needs on each fishing trip.

“Thank God my dad wasn’t a podiatrist,” Ric jokes about following in the footsteps of a famous outdoor writer. After graduating from Radford University and serving two years in Russia with the Peace Corps, Ric returned to Virginia Beach and started writing for The Fisherman magazine, where his dad was editor. When the kayak fishing scene exploded, Ric was among the first to get onboard. His 2007 book, The Complete Kayak Fisherman is one of the first how-to books to introduce anglers to paddle fishing. In 2010, Ric took on the role of editor at Kayak Angler magazine where he covered the latest trends in kayak fishing tactics, tackle, gear and destinations. A ravenous angler, Ric fishes from the mountain to the sea chasing everything from smallmouth bass to striped bass.
