YouTuber Matt Nelson is well-known for catching big fish with wacky lures! In this video he tests out a new snake lure while fishing for Muskellunge, or muskies.
Patience pays off when fishing for Muskie
Sometimes called the fish of 10,000 casts, Nelson had been out for around four hours with just one bite when a huge muskie emerged from the deep to chase the snake lure.
“This looks like some fishy stuff in here. I just wanna see one come up and blast that snake,” he said moments before the monster fish emerged.
The muskie chased the snake lure in slow figure eights, and Nelson had to dip the snake deeper in to entice the bite. It took almost a full minute before the fish smashed the snake lure.
“Man, that was one of the coolest eats I’ve ever seen. This fish chased that snake up. I had to figure-eight him a few times, but he finally smashed it,” said Nelson.
Muskellunge are an elusive freshwater predatory fish related to the pike family that are often found in places they can easily ambush prey like log jams and downed trees near banks, near rock piles or rocky points, edges like weed beds, ditches, drop offs or confluences. Far from an instant-gratification style trip, fishing for muskie is a game of patience.
“The good thing about muskie fishing is it doesn’t take a whole lot of fish to have a successful day. One is really all it takes,” Nelson added.
