The Fresh Baitz scorpion lure.

Nelson headed out to escape the wind on a river to search for smallmouth and test out the scorpion lure.

Do Bass Smash Scorpion Lures?

“I was Google searching for weird lures one night and I switched over to Facebook and the first thing that popped up was the Fresh Baitz scorpion,” explained Nelson, who goes by NDYakAngler on YouTube.

Nelson also noted that the scorpion lure looks a lot like a crayfish; crayfish can make up nearly three-quarters of a smallmouth bass diet according to Northern Wisconsin Bass Fishing Guide.

Nelson is off to a slow start with the wind on the river but eventually spots a few smallmouth and hooks into one.

“Tossed that scorpion over there and they both chased it down. That was pretty cool,” said Nelson. “He absolutely inhaled that scorpion.”

Nelson was just beginning to note that he’d spent more time paddling so far this evening than fishing when he hooked into another bass. Not long after the second smallmouth, he hooked into a third smallie on the scorpion lure.

“That’s a real nice smallie… absolute tank. Couldn’t say no to the scorpion,” said Nelson. “I’ve been having to work for it a little bit today but we are catching some really nice smallies.”

Nelson’s third smallmouth catch measured in at just a little over 19 inches. As the evening wore on Nelson went on to strike gold, hitting smallie after smallie on the scorpion lure, including hooking a 4-pound 11-ounce smallmouth before heading in for the night.
