Mike Loughran found himself snagged on something unusual in the water in this viral Instagram video. After tugging on his rod to pull up the mystery catch, Loughran raised a deer skull with large antlers from the depths. Loughran pulled the skull out of the water to inspect it before releasing it back into the water.
In the caption of his video, Loughran noted that during the winter deer will sometimes break through the ice, which is likely how the deer skull ended up in the water. While Loughran returned the skull to the lake, commenters noted that they would’ve taken a catch like that home.
Other strange catches
It’s not unusual for an angler to occasionally pull something strange out of the water. While fishing in Texas, Tarrence Gordwin stumbled upon a larger bass who had partially engulfed a smaller bass in its mouth.
Meanwhile, angler Eric Koffski from Maple Lake, MN caught himself an adorable kitten while fishing a tournament. The best part? Rather than a catch and release kitten incident, Koffski’s son named the cat Fisher and the family decided to keep the kitten.
Sometimes, the catch itself is more exciting than you planned for, take for example when this angler in Nova Scotia hooked into a great white shark while fishing for striped bass. Estimates put the juvenile great white shark at six to eight feet long and 200 to 250 pounds. In another instance of reeling in something strange, Adam Irino of Die Hard Fishing snagged a sea monster-like monkeyface prickleback eel.
