The big news at Mustang Survival is their new ADAPT bladder design on their top-end inflatable life vests. ADAPT stands for ADvanced Airway Protection and Turning.

First Look: Mustang Elite Inflatable Life Vest

The weak point on any inflatable life vest is the shape of the bladder. When inflated, the ADAPT bladder automatically turns me face up in the water. The bladder design protects my airway from spray while the flared “dog-leg” design stabilizes the PFD and improves comfort. Finally, a large pillow keeps my head out of the water.

The ADAPT technology is available on the new offshore Atlas 190 DLX and the new Elite 190. The Atlas 190 DLX includes an integrated hood to cover my head and protect me from secondary drowning. The Elite 190 is a lightweight option for offshore without the hood or the light. For kayak anglers, the Elite 120 is the lightest and most compact option with the ADAPT bladder and automatic inflator.

Lil Legends Child and Infant Foam Vests

As a former child outdoorsman, I was excited to see Mustang Survival’s new Lil Legends Child and Infant Foam Vests. When I was growing up, my parents would put me in an itchy, hot and blaze bulky orange PFD and let me loose. Although I don’t remember the experience (my Mom has plenty of photos), the uncomfortable foam life vest makes me appreciate a well-built life vest for kids.

Mustang’s Lil Legends is designed for comfort and mobility with a mesh back, breathable inner liner and rugged but comfortable outer fabric. I like the 3-piece head floatation that folds out of the way.

“Thank God my dad wasn’t a podiatrist,” Ric jokes about following in the footsteps of a famous outdoor writer. After graduating from Radford University and serving two years in Russia with the Peace Corps, Ric returned to Virginia Beach and started writing for The Fisherman magazine, where his dad was editor. When the kayak fishing scene exploded, Ric was among the first to get onboard. His 2007 book, The Complete Kayak Fisherman is one of the first how-to books to introduce anglers to paddle fishing. In 2010, Ric took on the role of editor at Kayak Angler magazine where he covered the latest trends in kayak fishing tactics, tackle, gear and destinations. A ravenous angler, Ric fishes from the mountain to the sea chasing everything from smallmouth bass to striped bass.
