The Hobie Sunglasses Made From Your Fishing Kayak

The Hull Float sunglasses use upcycled and bio-based plastic without sacrificing performance

While they look like a regular old pair of fishing sunglasses with a full wraparound frame, the Hobie Hull Floats are something unique. They’re made of upcycled plastic and not just any plastic, but these are actually made of plastic from Hobie kayaks.

When Hobie makes a kayak, there are certain parts of the kayak, such as the hatches, that they have to cut out. Well, that results in some excess plastic lying around the factory. Hobie took that plastic, ground it down, melted it, injected and molded it into Hull Float sunglasses. The lenses are also made of bio-based material—castor oil, actually. They are able to take the oil and turn it into a nylon lens.

The capability of the Hull Floats doesn’t end with a cool story though. These materials do not sacrifice any of the performance that the brand’s sunglasses are known for. The Hull Floats have the same optics that all Hobie sunglasses have. Polarized lenses are available in multiple shades and colors. And, just as the name implies, they float. They also donate a portion of the sales of these sunglasses to the FishAmerica Foundation, which supports fish habitat.

The Hull Float sunglasses are available at Hobie and other retailers including Amazon.

“Thank God my dad wasn’t a podiatrist,” Ric jokes about following in the footsteps of a famous outdoor writer. After graduating from Radford University and serving two years in Russia with the Peace Corps, Ric returned to Virginia Beach and started writing for The Fisherman magazine, where his dad was editor. When the kayak fishing scene exploded, Ric was among the first to get onboard. His 2007 book, The Complete Kayak Fisherman is one of the first how-to books to introduce anglers to paddle fishing. In 2010, Ric took on the role of editor at Kayak Angler magazine where he covered the latest trends in kayak fishing tactics, tackle, gear and destinations. A ravenous angler, Ric fishes from the mountain to the sea chasing everything from smallmouth bass to striped bass.
