One safety item I never leave the launch without is a compact safety light. Even if I don’t plan to fish past dark, I want a bright, clear safety lamp to increase my visibility in case I am delayed or fog rolls in. Guardian Angel’s Kayak Light Kit is the perfect solution.

About the size of two matchboxes, the brilliant LED lights are visible for five miles. The rechargeable, waterproof lamps are available in a white anchor light or green and red navigation lights. Four buttons on top of the light allow me to control brightness, power, monitor battery level and program the lights from solid to flashing and sequential lighting modes.

When I’m on the water, I can control the lights from my seat with a small remote control. The lights connect to the mounting bases with rare earth magnets so I can remove them from the kayak quickly and attach the light to any metal surface.

To meet the needs of more kayak anglers, Guardian Angel introduced new adhesive and screw-in mounts. They also offer mounting poles up to four feet long to ensure maximum visibility. For a palm-size safety light, Guardian Angel packs a long list of features in a small space.

“Thank God my dad wasn’t a podiatrist,” Ric jokes about following in the footsteps of a famous outdoor writer. After graduating from Radford University and serving two years in Russia with the Peace Corps, Ric returned to Virginia Beach and started writing for The Fisherman magazine, where his dad was editor. When the kayak fishing scene exploded, Ric was among the first to get onboard. His 2007 book, The Complete Kayak Fisherman is one of the first how-to books to introduce anglers to paddle fishing. In 2010, Ric took on the role of editor at Kayak Angler magazine where he covered the latest trends in kayak fishing tactics, tackle, gear and destinations. A ravenous angler, Ric fishes from the mountain to the sea chasing everything from smallmouth bass to striped bass.
