I carry a handheld VHF radio with me every time I go out fishing. It’s an easy way to contact rescue services and to keep in touch with other anglers on the water. I also like to listen in on what the boaters are doing to get an on-the-water fishing report. Plus, with a handheld VHF, you get real-time weather reports from the National Weather Service.

What excites me about with the Cobra BlueBound 150 is that the radio is only $99 USD. For 100 bucks, you get all the safety features of VHF radio. Plus it floats, it’s waterproof, and it has switchable power between .5, 1, or 3 Watts to conserve battery or increase range.

Cobra also offers models with GPS and distress signals for a higher price, but this is just a great, simple radio to keep with you. It’s easy to store on the boat, doesn’t take up a lot of space, and it’s going to come in handy when you really need it.

“Thank God my dad wasn’t a podiatrist,” Ric jokes about following in the footsteps of a famous outdoor writer. After graduating from Radford University and serving two years in Russia with the Peace Corps, Ric returned to Virginia Beach and started writing for The Fisherman magazine, where his dad was editor. When the kayak fishing scene exploded, Ric was among the first to get onboard. His 2007 book, The Complete Kayak Fisherman is one of the first how-to books to introduce anglers to paddle fishing. In 2010, Ric took on the role of editor at Kayak Angler magazine where he covered the latest trends in kayak fishing tactics, tackle, gear and destinations. A ravenous angler, Ric fishes from the mountain to the sea chasing everything from smallmouth bass to striped bass.
