Hobie pro angler Raf Vargas is no stranger to Kayak Angler, having served as both a contributor and the subject of articles about his record-breaking kayak catches in Guam. Vargas sent us this fun video of his personal best wahoo from 2017, caught using flying fish as live bait. The footage is an action-packed look at kayak fishing in a tropical saltwater setting.
Landing wahoo with live bait
Highly prized for their thick and tender white meat, wahoo are a speedy and powerful fish found in warm ocean waters throughout the world. These pelagic predators are a handful to land, owing to the speed and ferocity with which they strike. Here is what Vargas had to say about his big day:
“It was another amazing day on the water. This time I went out on my Hobie Outback with the new MirageDrive 180. Let me tell you, this drive is the smoothest I have seen.”
“I packed a bit light and took my Hobie Fish Bag just in case I got onto some mahi mahi. The day started with searching for bait. At the very first cast, I landed a dogtooth tuna, a first for me!” A first for Vargas, but certainly not the last.
“Shortly after I landed a mahi, followed by a flying fish. I immediately rigged the flying fish with the Live Zippin from Nitta Fishing Innovations. Threw him back in the water and within 15 minutes I hooked a 50-inch wahoo.”

“Watch the video…it’s action packed. And check out how I setup my Outback for this type of fishing. Cheers!” For more kayak fishing videos from Raf Vargas, check out his Inland Yaker Kayak Fishing YouTube channel.
