A kayak angler was fishing off Redondo Beach in Southern California when a sea lion began to circle his kayak. Things escalated when the sea lion went from investigating the angler’s boat to lunging onto the deck in this video published to local station KCAL News.
The kayak angler believed the sea lion was after the fresh catch in his kayak. When the sea lion made an offer he could refuse, the angler reported to the news station that he decided to give the sea lion his fish.
Not keeping a sea lion from their meal is a smart move in general. This is especially true this summer, as Southern Californians are seeing increased aggressive behavior from sea lions. The Los Angeles Times reports this has been due to a large marine algae bloom which affects the food source of these marine mammals and causes brain damage and erratic behavior in the sea lions.
