Anglers often devote a great deal of effort to find the best spots to cast their lure, but sometimes it’s easy—the fish find you. That’s just what happened to Brett Barley, a professional surfer, kayak angler and videographer, when he found himself surrounded by a school of rowdy red drum while fishing off North Carolina’s Outer Banks (OBX) barrier islands. Lucky for us, he caught the encounter on video.
A kayak fishing moment to remember
“Hundreds of bull red drum swarmed me in my kayak, within minutes of launching! I was caught in a feeding frenzy, and one of the best fishing moments of my life!” exclaims Barley in the caption to his video, the latest episode in his Life On Water YouTube series.
Commenters agree with Barley’s assessment, with Grayson Graham weighing in: “This is absolutely insane! This is probably the craziest thing I’ve seen fishing wise ever, just the size of the school is crazy and they’re all massive reds too!” Or, as commenter Orry Main amusingly observes at about 4:45 of the video, “One red fish yells ‘MOSH PIT’!!!”
