They say throw big bait for big fish. That’s the tactic Rich Janitschek took off the far edge of Panama to land a roosterfish.
Janitschek was fishing with Los Buzos Resort in the warm waters off Panama. The angler drops lures to start and gets a few different snapper for the grill. Janitschek then switches to a fresh bigeye trevally on the hook for bigger game.
Live bait is the bait of choice for roosterfish. Blue runners are considered the best, but other fish like bigeye trevally are known to work as well.
After a few missed hookups, Janitschek shows off the bait and teeth marks from the fish taunting him below the surface. The angler recasts and finally ends up in a fight that doubles his rod over, nearly pulling it under the kayak. After a long battle, Janitschek eventually lands the roosterfish, accomplishing a childhood fishing dream.
