We’ve all been there, our first time kayak fishing. Trying something new is humbling with embarrassing errors, but some rookies inspire us with their early successes. Here’s a look at memorable rookie years.

Wyatt Hammond made a splash in his first year fishing the Kayak Bass Fishing Trail series. He was the only angler to win both Rookie of the Year and Angler of the Year trophies in the same season.

Did you know The Hobbit was J.R.R. Tolkien’s first book? Other bestselling debut novels include To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, which won the Pulitzer Prize, and the classic Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.

When Jackie Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, he became the first African-American to play in Major League Baseball. His rookie year he batted .297, led the National League in stolen bases and played in all seven games of the World Series.

“Baby One More Time,” the song and album by Britney Spears, debuted at number one in 22 countries and was the biggest debut hit in music history. It earned over $24 million.

Basketball fans often point to Wilt Chamberlain’s 1959-60 rookie year with the Philadelphia Warriors as the best ever. Averaging a phenomenal 37.6 points and 27 rebounds per game, he was both the NBA’s MVP and Rookie of the Year.

In 2002, Disney released The Rookie starring Dennis Quaid playing a middle-aged high school baseball coach with a 98-mile-per-hour fastball who gets drafted into the big leagues. The movie garnered mixed reviews but grossed $80.7 million, a home run for a film with a $22-million budget.

Jim Brown is considered one of the greatest football players of all time. He was the only rookie to win the National Football League’s MVP Award. Brown retired from football in the 1970s to become Hollywood’s first Black action hero. In the movie 100 Rifles, he made history as the first actor in an interracial love scene.
