What is This Odd Fishing Vessel? (Video)

Angler attempts to land goliath grouper from difficult-to-define floating contraption

As kayak anglers, we’re constantly teasing debates including what is and isn’t a kayak. So, how do we define the donut of a boat in this video called the Ultraskiff? More to the point, can the angler in this video land a goliath grouper from one? And, would you fish from one?

According to the Ultraskiff website, “The 360 degree experience offers you an expansive constant vantage point from a higher perch than most other watercraft. You can turn, pivot, cast and stand up comfortably and confidently.” The Ultraskiff has an appearance that suggests its inventor was inspired by a bobber on the water.

The oddest thing about the Ultraskiff, though, is trying to classify it. At first glance, we would never file it under kayak, but it also isn’t really a motorboat. Interestingly enough, like a kayak, it’s made of rotomolded plastic. Like a kayak, it is carried, or rather rolled, to the water. Its specifications are also not too dissimilar from our vessels, weighing in at 123 pounds. That’s right within the range of many of the popular kayak designs today.

Lo and behold, however, it doesn’t look like it would work to try to paddle one. But so many today are kayak fishing without the use of a paddle. We’ll leave it filed under oddity of the angling world, and enjoy some entertainment as we watch Captain Ben Chancey fight a monstrous goliath grouper from the floating contraption.

  1. Wow! They discovered the coracle, and made it a SOT. If my electric motor conked out, I don’t think I would relish paddling it home.
