As round one of the inaugural YakOff awards approaches its halfway point, things are heating up as contestants go head-to-head to determine who has the sickest, most decked-out, clever kayak fishing rig.
This week saw the smack talk get personal on Marty Hughes’ Kayakjak Fishing Intel podcast as anglers Robert English and Chad Hoover faced off.
Robert English and Chad Hoover face off in YakOffs
“It kind of sucks a little bit that you’ve got two professional content creators going head to head in round one,” said Hoover on the podcast. “But hey! Let’s get punched in the nose,” Hoover added.
Hoover is the founder of Kayak Bass Fishing and a YouTube content creator, while English is the Wilderness Systems Pro Team manager and has been with Wilderness Systems since 2018.
Also on the podcast was Keith Stevenson, the organizer of the YakOffs.
“To make it fair I drew names out of a hat,” Steveson explained. “That’s the way the cookie crumbles right now.”
Did Robert English kick a puppy?
The spirit of the YakOff awards is friendly competition and a little smack talk, and this week the smack talk heated up early in the game with Hoover taking to Facebook.
“Y’all please stop by and give your boy a vote. Mostly because I want this concept to be successful so they keep doing it year after year,” wrote Hoover on Facebook. “Please vote for me because you want to and not against Robert for that puppy he kicked. That’s been a loooong time ago and I’m sure he still feels really bad. On top of that, I think the puppy was okay, well mostly.”
Hoover shared in the Kayakjak Fishing Intel podcast that he did in fact invent the tale of English kicking a puppy, but shared that he had people direct message him to ask if it was true.
“I’m like no, it was a full grown dog. I said puppy to make it worse,” Hoover joked. “It’s called the YakOff awards. If we’re supposed to be serious doing something called the YakOff awards we’re doing it wrong.”
English joked that he considered putting bandages on his dog and playing along, and Hoover shared that he considered trying to clip on a man bun to make fun of English, but he couldn’t get it to stick. English suggested Hoover try superglue.
