Kayak fishing isn’t always big bass and rainbows—sometimes it’s downright scary out there! From shark attacks to spooky catches, here are five kayak fishing videos to keep you up at night.
Angler catches alien creature from the deep
From a fishing kayak in New Zealand, this angler reels in a spooky catch. With a thin, long, mirror-like body and huge eyes, this fish looks like something from another planet.
The catch in question? A frostfish is found in temperate marine waters at depths between 50-600 meters, most often around 200 meters.
Kayak angler hit by motorboat
It was a beautiful day on the water on the California coast when Adam Irino of Die Hard Fishing was struck by a motor boat.
In the video, we see Irino fishing on a clear and calm day. Meanwhile, a small motor boat speeds directly toward him. Irino realizes what’s about to happen and begins to wave and try to hail the boat. He then frantically pedals his boat to avoid taking a direct hit from the boaters.
The motor boat nails the tail end of his kayak and some of his gear falls into the water, but Irino, luckily, is unscathed and went on to catch a personal best that day. Later, Irino shared this video on his top five lessons learned after getting hit by a boat.
Angler capsizes into freezing water
On a chilly April day at Riparian Bay, New Jersey, kayak angler Ambrose Salmini took a tumble into the ocean while chasing striped bass, making for one of the most terrifying kayak fishing videos on the internet. Conditions included a WNW 25 mph wind gusting to 40 mph with an air temp of 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius) and water temp of 48 degrees Fahrenheit (9 degrees Celsius).
“I know you’re not going out there, right?” an older man said to Salmini as he prepared to launch. Salmini explained that launching was indeed his plan.
“You’re an idiot, you’re crazy. Be careful,” the man warned.
“I probably had a life preserver in my car. I just didn’t think about it, honestly,” Salmini explains in the video.
After his first catch of the day while trying to take a photo, Salmini shifts his weight wrong. This combines with the wind and waves, and Salmini ends up in the water.
Luckily, a bystander on shore witnessed the capsize and called the police. About 25-30 minutes after capsizing, a police boat arrived to rescue Salmini, finding him hanging on to his bright green kayak for floatation. As a result, Salmini is able to share the footage and some lessons learned on YouTube.
Great white shark capsizes kayak angler
In this viral video, watch as a kayak angler is capsized by a Great White Shark on the North Coast of South Africa. Here, this angler sees a massive shark chase their catch, ram into the side of their kayak, and capsize them.
The only thing more impressive than the shot of the shark ramming into the kayak? The 15 seconds it took this angler to self-rescue back into their boat and out of shark-infested waters.
Mystery ocean creature caught on GoPro
Out on the Big Sur coast Fishing Doctors Adventures has an encounter with the unknown. In this short video, we see Fishing Doctors Adventures turn around to catch a glimpse of a creature in the swell behind him. The creature disappears before the viewer can get a closer look.
The comments on the video are quick to point out that the unidentifiable creature of the deep looks an awful lot like a seal.
