I’m old school, I like a performance paddle kayak for offshore fishing. In the surf zone, a big kayak, heavy pedal system and unforgiving frame seat make me nervous. The Hydra 130 is half the weight of a full-size pedal kayak, has a low-profile seat and slices through the water under paddle power.

One of my favorite discoveries of 2026 is the new Strike fishing shoes. The Bluefin Lace Sneaker is designed for offshore fishing. Based on a shock-absorbing EVA sole, the Bluefin has a sipped and channeled outsole for ultimate traction on wet surfaces. I like the EVA heel that provides additional support. The Bomb Dip is a large cup-faced topwater appropriate for trophy striped bass. Every aspect of the lure is designed to cause chaos and commotion. The cup face has a bubble chamber to add a deep gulping sound. Inside the clear-plastic lure body, holographic tape imitates the prism of fish scales and a suspended foil patch vibrates to reflect light like a disco ball. To increase casting distance, the Ocea has a weight transfer system to move the center of gravity from the front of the lure to the back while the lure flies through the air. When the Bomb Dip hits water, the weight settles in the center of the lure to improve swimming action.

Due to limited storage space on a kayak, offshore kayak anglers use the smallest reels possible to catch the biggest fish. Braided fishing line is thinner than monofilament, allowing anglers to pack maximum line on the minimum-size reel. For offshore fishing, I use a low-profile, foam life vest to balance comfort and safety. Safety first, the foam life vest is inherently buoyant to keep me afloat no matter what. Second, the foam vest makes it easier to reenter the kayak and keep fishing. Salus Marine’s Outcast life vest increases comfort without sacrificing safety. The soft, contoured foam and quick-dry breathable liner are cool and unobtrusive. The Outcast has two large front pockets to hold my smartphone and personal locator beacon. I clip a whistle to one shoulder strap and attach a paddling knife to the lash tab. The life vest has six points of fit adjustment to snug the life vest whether I’m wearing shorts and a T-shirt or my winter drysuit and six layers of sweaters.
