We are always on the lookout for the most innovative rigging solutions in the kayak angling community. Better even if these innovations are simple and cheap to put together. This setup for a side-mounted trolling motor by Eric Planer is exactly the type of solution we are curious to see put to work.
On Planer’s YouTube channel, FloBass, the angler was seeking a trolling motor solution for under $400. Planer found a never used Minn Kota trolling motor for a steal. He still needed a way to mount the motor to his kayak. Inspired by other DIYers, Planer set out to make a budget friendly motor mount off the side of his kayak utilizing some two-by-fours and the existing track mounts on his Bonafide kayak.
The angler measures out the length he needs to extend beyond the side of the kayak, creates the reinforced area where the Minn Kota motor will attach, and bolts it to his Bonafide’s utility track. The result, a functioning trolling motor and mount with reasonable cost and labor.
