Brad Hole and Todd Switzer caught and released over 100 Lahontan Cut Throat Trout out of their kayaks over a two day period on Omak Lake, WA. The lake is in the high desert plains of central Washington state and is part of the Colville Indian Reservation. Lohontan Cut Throat Trout were introduced to the lake decades ago and thrive in its high alkaline water. This lake is considered by many as the best trout fishery in the state and has been brilliantly managed by Colville Tribal Fisheries. The Washington state record Cut Throat Trout was caught here in 1993 at just over 18 pounds. The lake is open to fishing all year with the purchase of a tribal fishing permit, but all fish must be released between March 1st and May 31st. These are aggressive trout that will take at a wide variety of lures and spoons. The winds can be a significant issue on this lake, but when everything lines up it’s not unusual to hookup every ten minutes.

“Thank God my dad wasn’t a podiatrist,” Ric jokes about following in the footsteps of a famous outdoor writer. After graduating from Radford University and serving two years in Russia with the Peace Corps, Ric returned to Virginia Beach and started writing for The Fisherman magazine, where his dad was editor. When the kayak fishing scene exploded, Ric was among the first to get onboard. His 2007 book, The Complete Kayak Fisherman is one of the first how-to books to introduce anglers to paddle fishing. In 2010, Ric took on the role of editor at Kayak Angler magazine where he covered the latest trends in kayak fishing tactics, tackle, gear and destinations. A ravenous angler, Ric fishes from the mountain to the sea chasing everything from smallmouth bass to striped bass.
