Anglers looking for big time thrills in freshwater should look into kayak fishing for sturgeon on the Snake River in Idaho. Idaho Guide Service is starting kayak fishing trips for these prehistoric giants this March or April.

“We can catch a 200 to 400 pound sturgeon (catch and release only on the Snake) from our kayaks, says Olin Gardner of Idaho Guide Service. “It’s an incredible blast, I have had a big sturgeon pull me back and forth across the river and jump completely out of the water beside the boat…somewhat scary, but totally awesome.”

Half day and full day trips are available, close to Twin Falls on the Snake River. “We furnish all the gear, but you still need a license. It is less than $15 for a one day, non-resident license.”

“We meet at the river around 8 to 9am do orientation and boat set up,” said Gardner. “We also have raft available to haul extra gear and lunch and beverages on this mostly road-less section of the river. We have a great time and always catch fish.”

A trip costs $250 per person, each additional person $150, (minimum 2 persons, maximum 4 persons). Prices do not include 5% State Tax and 3% Federal Use Tax.

“You really have to experience it to believe it,” said Gardner. “It usually takes a half hour or more to land a big one from the shore, but longer from a kayak. Some times we have to take the boat to shore to land the fish, since all fish have to be released, unharmed and kept mostly in the water. I’ve even had one on for over an hour.

“I have not fished for sail fish or marlin, but have taken clients who have and they say its as much fun and even more amazing as these are fish that live in the river. They didn’t realize that fish that big live this far from the ocean.”
