No matter the forecast, team Kayak Angler was eager to get our hands on YakAttack’s new unnamed kayak motor at ICAST Demo Day. Ric Burnley grabbed his rain gear and hopped on board to take the motor out for a spin.
First Look: YakAttack Kayak Motor
“As you can see,” Burnley begins, leaning back to show off the motor in action, “this is much like a regular trolling motor, except it fits in the middle of your kayak in the pedal drive. And that allows it to perform as both an electric outboard and a trolling motor.”
“So you get the powering to the fishing hole of the electric outboard and then you get the maneuverability of a trolling motor once you get out there,” he says.
Burnley pilots the motorized kayak with one hand while talking to the camera. “The whole thing is controlled with this very simple remote control here. Simple features like turn the propeller on, forward and reverse, turn it sideways, anchor lock and all these other features.”
YakAttack’s new motor has the added benefit of “powering the boat from the middle of the kayak,” according to Burnley, “[so] I’m not as worried about getting my fishing line caught around it like I would a trolling motor or an outboard sticking on the bow or the stern. And it keeps it kind of out of the way and easy to reach.”
“We’re really excited to get this thing out on the water and test it out on some real fishing,” he sums up. “And we hope to see this motor in action. And…sunny skies.”
