Back before kayaks with electric motors were cool, Torqeedo produced the first reliable electric outboard systems for small boats. Now, there are several companies powering kayaks and SUPs with electric motors and Torqeedo has updated their kayak motors to lead the race into the next age of kayak propulsion.

First Look: Torqeedo Travel UL

On the redesigned and renamed Travel UL, Torqeedo boosted the power from 29.5 volts to 48 volts to provide more efficient power and increase speed and range. Supporting the increased power, new batteries provide more juice to keep the motors running. The batteries are still IP67-rated for water resistance. New connections are easier to attach with a ¼ turn coupling to a heavier NMMA 2000 data cable. Eventually, owners will be able to monitor motor information on their fish finder/GPS screen. Charging the battery is faster and easier with a new 180-watt charger for quick recharge. The new charging port also allows me to supplement my power with a solar panel.

Continuing the updated and modernized design, Torqeedo completely reworked the Travel UL throttle. The new control unit is smaller and more robust with a dimmable backlit LCD screen. Without scrolling between screens, I can monitor multiple functions at a glance. The internal GPS is accurate down to a few feet to provide detailed information on range and speed. I can couple the engine data with a smartphone app via Bluetooth and see my battery range displayed on a map. By adjusting the motor speed, I can increase the battery range to assure I return to the launch with plenty of charge.

Looking closely at the Travel UL motor, I notice a few major updates. First, the steering yolk is all metal to increase durability and improve control. A small pulley on the tilt system makes retracting the motor from my kayak seat super smooth. Most importantly, a new skeg is constructed of indestructible composite material that takes a beating without creating noise and vibration.

With more electric motors hitting the water, Torqeedo stays ahead of the pack with a redesigned and renamed classic. The updated features and components combined with impeccable German engineering result in a reliable and durable electric motor that will power my kayak for years.

“Thank God my dad wasn’t a podiatrist,” Ric jokes about following in the footsteps of a famous outdoor writer. After graduating from Radford University and serving two years in Russia with the Peace Corps, Ric returned to Virginia Beach and started writing for The Fisherman magazine, where his dad was editor. When the kayak fishing scene exploded, Ric was among the first to get onboard. His 2007 book, The Complete Kayak Fisherman is one of the first how-to books to introduce anglers to paddle fishing. In 2010, Ric took on the role of editor at Kayak Angler magazine where he covered the latest trends in kayak fishing tactics, tackle, gear and destinations. A ravenous angler, Ric fishes from the mountain to the sea chasing everything from smallmouth bass to striped bass.
