Walleye fishing is changing, and advances in forward-facing sonar are playing a major role. With evolving techniques come evolving baits. We recently had an opportunity to see new lures from a species-specific bait company called Walleye County, and there Flatbed Drifter, the Ditch Minnow, and the Fender Shad.
The Flatbed drifter is a jigging-style bait for forward-facing sonar. It’s a style of bait that according to Walleye County is like a hybrid leech that also acts like a nightcrawler in an attempt to mimic the natural baits that walleye seem to love.
When it comes to minnows, they have the Ditch Minnow. This minnow can be jigged off the bottom or ripped really hard to trigger reaction-style bites. Walleye County has discovered with forward-facing sonar that walleye aren’t always on the bottom; theyโve found them suspending 35 feet up or maybe only five feet down. This bait does the job of triggering bites here and is a key piece for versatility.
The third bait we looked at is called the Fender Shad. The shad can be threaded onto a jig head and either jigged off the bottom, strolled slow, or hit along rocks for an erratic motion. With forward-facing sonar, Walleye County explains this is a great option for pinpointing and putting it right above their head,
