The great thing about the Selk’bag is that you can walk around camp and still stay comfortable.

When I first saw the Selk’bag 5G sleeping bags, $169, my first thought was, “that’s different.” Then my curiousity got the best of my and I tried it on in my office. I ended up writing up two articles before I took it off, and not because I was uncomfortable, but because the 37 degree F rating for the sleeping bag proved too toasty for the confines of my office.

I spent a few nights sleeping in my truck while wearing the Selk’bag getup and in the morning I wouldn’t want to move I’d be so comfortable. The great thing about the 5G sleeping bag though, is that even when you’ve convinced yourself to get up, you don’t have to get out of the sleeping bag. With built-in arms and legs, zip off booties and a slot for your hands to pop out of the arms, you could even rig up your fishing kayak in comfort before hitting the water.

A slot for your hands make the Selk'bag more practical.

The super-plush sleeping bag made me feel like I was the guy from The Hurt Locker, walking towards my fate, but that wasn’t really a bad feeling. A kangaroo, sweatshirt-style front pocket let me keep things like my phone or keys handy while walking around camp in the early morning, or even a knife for early rod rigging duties.

I really appreciated the new leg vents, because my legs always get toasty while I sleep. The booties also let me zip off the feet completely if I got too warm during the night. The insulated hood was comfortable and not too restrictive, letting me sleep soundly without feeling claustrophobic. The 5G sleeping bag even comes with a convenient carry sack so you can pack it away without taking up too much space.

Give the Selk'bag a try before you disregard it as a gimmick.
