The new FluxJet fishing kayak is making waves as the first jet-powered fishing kayak, blending traditional angling features with innovative propulsion, even winning the Best of Show award at ICAST 2025.

The FluxJet looks like it meets the needs of a great fishing kayak on its own. It features a frame seat and fishing rod holders, everything you expect a kayak to have these days for any type of fishing. But what makes the FluxJet unique is that it is the first of its kind: a jet-powered fishing kayak. Underneath the kayak in the stern is a jet motor, just like you would find on a jet ski. Depending on the size of the battery you use, the power of this motor varies. It can go from three to seven miles an hour.

Steering is controlled just like a jet ski, with the motor itself. Even with the motor, the whole kayak system only weighs 88 pounds. This means you don’t have to take the motor out every time you go fishing; you can throw this right back in the back of your truck or even probably car top it without having to take it all apart.

The throttle is controlled by a dial, and steering is controlled by foot pedals in the kayak cockpit, just like any rudder-controlled kayak. It can use any size battery, from a 12-volt up to a 64-volt, whatever works for you. Again, the speed is dependent on the size battery you use.

The kayak all comes together for only $3,000, and you provide the battery. On its own, it makes a great little fishing kayak, but adding the jet drive gives you the option for motorization without all the hassle of having an outboard or a trolling motor on this kayak.

These jet motor kayaks are available for order, along with more info, at FluxJet.

“Thank God my dad wasn’t a podiatrist,” Ric jokes about following in the footsteps of a famous outdoor writer. After graduating from Radford University and serving two years in Russia with the Peace Corps, Ric returned to Virginia Beach and started writing for The Fisherman magazine, where his dad was editor. When the kayak fishing scene exploded, Ric was among the first to get onboard. His 2007 book, The Complete Kayak Fisherman is one of the first how-to books to introduce anglers to paddle fishing. In 2010, Ric took on the role of editor at Kayak Angler magazine where he covered the latest trends in kayak fishing tactics, tackle, gear and destinations. A ravenous angler, Ric fishes from the mountain to the sea chasing everything from smallmouth bass to striped bass.
