The sport of kayak angling is growing in popularity like no other outdoor sport, purses as high as $35,000 to win has gained the attention of big boat anglers and having them run out to their local kayak dealer to get a piece of the pie. With much of the nationwide focus being on these huge payout events, the Great Plains Kayak Fishing Series reverses its paddles to the roots of kayak fishing: fellowship, education, community, and …great prizes.
The masterminds behind this throwback series are members of the Team Boat Dock pro staff. The pro staff is comprised of dedicated community members who range from educators, police officers, firefighters, and even a pilates instructor who focus on service to their respective communities and are some of the best kayak anglers in the Midwest.
Each of the events has a unique platform which will allow the competitive anglers to compete against the best of the great plains as well have opportunities to be partnered with a youth in the kid/pro division or a veteran in the vet/pro division as well as other opportunities at each event to introduce and promote the sport of Kayak fishing to novice anglers.
The series kicks off May 6-7th in a 24hr marathon event appropriately named the “Road Runner” it will give anglers 24 hours to get their limit of a mutli species from public waters in Nebraska. Anglers will be given a radius of fishable public water to compete from.
On June 25th the kid/pro will focus on introducing young anglers to the sport while allowing the Pro’s to compete for series points. The youth will be competing in their own class focusing on the “Hero” shot for points rather than trying to wrangle a camera, measuring board and a identifier to score their fish. The Pro however, will be scored by the total length of their fish. The winner of the youth division will be awarded a new 2016 Jackson boat as well as a paddle from Bending Branches and a PFD.
August 13th the heat will be on as Kayakapalooza partners with the GPKFS to offer a weekend of camping at Lake Wanahoo in Wahoo Nebraska. One of the premiere fishing spots in the Midwest, Lake Wanahoo offers a paddlers paradise of 600+ acres of “wake free” fishing and a ton of timber. There will be hundreds of fish and a true chance at a Master Angler Northern Pike. The event has attracted anglers from around the Midwest for its comradery and great fishing and camping.
August 19th is going to be a unique event which will allow for Kayak Anglers a chance at competing against…you guessed it…big boats in The Midwest Catfish classic hosted at Lake Calmus. Anglers will have the same CPR format and allow for a chance a monster catfish. All while gaining important points for the season series.
September 17th will bring the series full circle to wrap the year up joining Veterans of our armed services with experienced Kayak Anglers in a format that will make the event enjoyable and competitive.
While the GPKFS focuses on the foundation of kayak angling the series has some serious sponsorship and prizes for both the novice and pro divisions. The Boat Dock, Jackson Kayak, Emotion Kayak, Orion Coolers, Manley Rods, Bending Branches Paddles, Bass Pro Shops, Yak Gear, KayakJacks Outfitters, Angry Sturgeon Lures and the official Media Sponsor Kayak Angler Magazine.
