Kayak transportat gets bling at ICAST 2016. Carts and trailers that get the boat and everything else to the water.

One of the most important considerations when purchasing a kayak is how will you transport it to the water. Modern fishing kayaks are big and heavy, requiring carts and trailers to get around. These great transportation options were on display at ICAST 2016.

Malone Auto Racks came out with two impressive new carts and a mind-blowing trailer. The YakHauler cart features extra large “Never-go-flat” tires that will cover any rocky and uneven terrain. The BeachHauler is outfitted with seven-inch-wide low-pressure tires that float over sand and soft ground. Both models are built of corrosion resistant material with stainless steel hardware. Twin kick stands keep the cart in place while loading or unloading. The wheels quick release with steel pins. Snap buckle straps hold the kayak in place. They are available with padded bunks to fit any hull shape. These carts are designed to carry large, heavy fishing kayaks anywhere fish hide.

Not to be out shined by it’s own products, Malone Auto Racks added the MegaSport Base Trailer to their line up of watersports transport gear. When I spotted this unit my eyes popped out of my head. Starting with a beefed up 86-inch wide trailer with a jack stand and 1000 pound leaf springs. Not only can paddlers add a long list of boat and board bases, but the super-trailer also accepts a new line of storage and even lighting options. They’ve designed storage cages and boxes that fit in the base of the trailer. There is even an electric charging station for electronics and lighting. Speaking of lighting, wired and wireless led lights are available to shine on gear while loading in early moring and unloading after dark. Add a second tier load bar system and solid rod tubes and a milk-crate storage cage. This is the most all-inclusive watersports trailer I’ve ever seen. And the price comes in at $1799 for the base model and $3500 for a full outrigged trailer. Not only will this trailer hold all the gear you own, it will allow you to buy more gear to carry.

A simple buckle and strap lock the boat or board in place. Pull a pin on each axle and the wheels detach. The frame folds up and fits in a small hatch or lash to the SUP deck. This cart is great for grab and go trips with small, light kayaks or a easy and safe way to wheel a standup paddleboard to the water.

“Thank God my dad wasn’t a podiatrist,” Ric jokes about following in the footsteps of a famous outdoor writer. After graduating from Radford University and serving two years in Russia with the Peace Corps, Ric returned to Virginia Beach and started writing for The Fisherman magazine, where his dad was editor. When the kayak fishing scene exploded, Ric was among the first to get onboard. His 2007 book, The Complete Kayak Fisherman is one of the first how-to books to introduce anglers to paddle fishing. In 2010, Ric took on the role of editor at Kayak Angler magazine where he covered the latest trends in kayak fishing tactics, tackle, gear and destinations. A ravenous angler, Ric fishes from the mountain to the sea chasing everything from smallmouth bass to striped bass.
