Die-cast construction makes the Redington BEHEMOTH tougher and look cooler than any other reel.

I first saw the new BEHEMOTH from Redington at the ICAST/IFTD trade show in Orlando, and I knew it was going to be a hit with anglers that are obsessed with durability and tough gear. Basically, every kayak angler. Redington used die-cast construction to give this reel it’s tough durability and it’s wicked look. Looking at the V-spool of the BEHEMOTH is like looking into the rafters of a gothic cathedral.

That V-spool is designed to do more than just look cool. The design increases backing capacity so that you can forget about that giant fish spooling you. Not only was I able to fit more backing, but the way that the spool is so slanted, the line peeled off my spool smoother than any other reel before. Perfect for peeling line mid-cast or handling lighter leaders where finesse is required.

The construction of the Redington Behemoth makes it feel bulletproof.

The die-cast construction also lets Redington offer the reel at a lower price. Starting at only $109.95, after testing this reel I think that’s the steal of the season. The construction and durability aren’t the only torches for this reel to stout though, it’s main claim to fame is the most powerful drag capacity in its class.

The BEHEMOTH offers 15lbs of torque in the 5/6 model and up to a measurement of over 30lbs of torque for the 11/12, blowing out the competition with it’s strength.  The super heavy-duty carbon fiber and stainless steel braking discs are designed for “the utmost in reliability and power,” and power is what I felt. When a fish started its run, I was able to tire it in half the time, if not sooner (it’s hard to look at your watch when excited about a fish). The oversized drag adjustment knob makes quick adjustments on the fly simple and easy. The large arbor let me pick up line with suprising dexterity and the reduced line memory let me lay out casts evenly, without bunching.

The drag system on the Redington Behemoth could stop a Mack truck.

Even though it feels like a solid reel and has the durabilty of granite, this reel still feels very light. At 5.7 ounces (5wt), this reel won’t unbalance your outfit with a reel that weighs like a brick, but rather will compliment your setup with a unique reel that can withstand any abuse you throw at it.

The BEHEMOTH comes with a nylon reel case and a lifetime warranty. Currently available for $109.95 for the 5/6 and 7/8 and $129.95 for the 9/10 and 11/12 models.
