Gear favorites like Scotty’s Anchor Lock make rigging easy and safe.

I’m always excited to catch up with the folks at Scotty and RAM for new ideas to rig my kayak. At 2016 Outdoor Retailer tradeshow, I discovered some existing gadgets that I know will become part of my arsenal.

Stopping by Scotty’s booth, I noticed their Anchor Lock anchor system. The Anchor Lock fits in a Scotty Mount and can be rotated 360 degrees. The anchor line runs through a cam in the Anchor Lock. Pull the rope and let go and the anchor falls. Pull the rope again to engage the cam and lock the rope in place. The Anchor Lock makes it easy to run an anchor from the bow or stern of the boat. The cam makes deploying quick and quiet so I can move from spot to spot without tangling with the rope.

At the RAM booth, I also picked up an oldie but goodie. I noticed a RAM ball with a lag nut attachment. Immediately my brain started spitting out possible uses for this handy one-inch RAM ball. I can screw it into a tree at camp and hold a light or any RAM attachment.

RAM has partnered with Gear Aid lights to build purpose made mounts for their line of super-bright and super durable LED lamps. My favorite feature is the USB outlets that I can use to charge a phone or power electronics. The lights are waterproof and bomb proof and run for hours on a rechargeable battery.

“Thank God my dad wasn’t a podiatrist,” Ric jokes about following in the footsteps of a famous outdoor writer. After graduating from Radford University and serving two years in Russia with the Peace Corps, Ric returned to Virginia Beach and started writing for The Fisherman magazine, where his dad was editor. When the kayak fishing scene exploded, Ric was among the first to get onboard. His 2007 book, The Complete Kayak Fisherman is one of the first how-to books to introduce anglers to paddle fishing. In 2010, Ric took on the role of editor at Kayak Angler magazine where he covered the latest trends in kayak fishing tactics, tackle, gear and destinations. A ravenous angler, Ric fishes from the mountain to the sea chasing everything from smallmouth bass to striped bass.
