Wilderness Systems kicked off the annual ICAST tradeshow with a long list of new goodies. The most hotly anticipated addition to the line is the new RADAR. This boat can be powered by paddle, Helix MD motor drive or new Helix PD pedal drive. A new hull design makes it possible to switch from one power source to another. And the FlexPod OS makes it possible to install electronics with either the pedal or motor system. The boat will be offered in 135, 115 and a limited edition Radar 115 that comes with pedal and motor drive.

Perception also got in on the pedal game with the new Pescador 120 Pilot that can be outfitted with the Pilot pedal drive. Perception added a seat designed for comfortable pedalling and bow storage pods for mounting electronics and carrying gear. This will be the first boat with a pedal system that is priced well under $2000.

Wilderness also released a new, compact version of the popular ATAK. The ATAK 120 hosts the same great open cockpit design and stable hull in a smaller package able to fish back waters and small ponds. The smaller boat is also easier to transport and store. We’re most excited about a new line of accessories to come out of the Confluence shop. Starting with a smart new fishing crate and accessories to support electronics, Wilderness is looking to provide everything anglers need to outfit their excellent line of kayaks.

“Thank God my dad wasn’t a podiatrist,” Ric jokes about following in the footsteps of a famous outdoor writer. After graduating from Radford University and serving two years in Russia with the Peace Corps, Ric returned to Virginia Beach and started writing for The Fisherman magazine, where his dad was editor. When the kayak fishing scene exploded, Ric was among the first to get onboard. His 2007 book, The Complete Kayak Fisherman is one of the first how-to books to introduce anglers to paddle fishing. In 2010, Ric took on the role of editor at Kayak Angler magazine where he covered the latest trends in kayak fishing tactics, tackle, gear and destinations. A ravenous angler, Ric fishes from the mountain to the sea chasing everything from smallmouth bass to striped bass.
