Close up of the FeeFree Overdrive Pedal and Motor System for kayak fishing.

One of the most hotly anticipated arrivals at this year’s ICAST tradeshow is FeelFree’s Overdrive. The revolutionary new system combines pedal and motor power in one unit. Head Designer, Peter Murphy took us on a tour of the new propulsion system.

“We wanted to keep the system simple and functional,” he explained.Drop the prop and shaft into any existing FeelFree boat and use a remote to control speed and direction. “You can even adjust the pitch of the propeller for more speed or an easier pedal,” he showed us.

Then push the motor unit into place and the system runs on electric power. The unit runs off a 12-volt battery and weighs in at 18 pounds. They’ve added a new pedal-friendly seat that can be adjusted fore and aft. We expect the Overdrive to hit shelves in 2017, but the cost has not been determined.

“Thank God my dad wasn’t a podiatrist,” Ric jokes about following in the footsteps of a famous outdoor writer. After graduating from Radford University and serving two years in Russia with the Peace Corps, Ric returned to Virginia Beach and started writing for The Fisherman magazine, where his dad was editor. When the kayak fishing scene exploded, Ric was among the first to get onboard. His 2007 book, The Complete Kayak Fisherman is one of the first how-to books to introduce anglers to paddle fishing. In 2010, Ric took on the role of editor at Kayak Angler magazine where he covered the latest trends in kayak fishing tactics, tackle, gear and destinations. A ravenous angler, Ric fishes from the mountain to the sea chasing everything from smallmouth bass to striped bass.
