“In the waters off Kodiak, Alaska I found some structure that looked promising for halibut,” said Ryan Black. “We had our annual salmon runs in the area so I was targeting both species. I was trolling at about 2 mph in my Ocean Kayak Torque using a 4 ounce banana weight to a Number 0 flasher that was trailing a green hoochie.

As I moved into the bottom of the ravine in 60 feet of water, I let out line to get closer to the bottom. I bounced the weight on the sand and reeled up about three turns and BAM! It just about pulled the rod from my hand. It was about a 15 minute battle with this guy towing me around in all directions. I made three attempts to subdue him and bring him aboard with no luck. When he finally tired, I trolled him into the shallows and got the picture. This was one to remember.”
