Sneak peek at Jackson’s pedal drive in the new Coosa FD.

Jackson Kayak has jumped into the alternative power race with a new pedal and motor drive boat. Starting with the popular Coosa HD hull the new Coosa FD (FlexDrive) will take a pedal power or motor power option. At OR Demo Day, the Jackson Crew had the Coosa FD surrounded by a crowd of fans. Product development manager, Damon Bungard took us on a tour of the pedal system. The drive comes in two parts. The Pedal unit can disconnect from the lower unit for easy car topping. The three-blade propeller pitch can be adjusted to improve speed or torque. Pull two tabs and the lower unit pops up to clear shallow water. The motor unit was not available, yet, but Bungard says it will fit in the same well as the pedal drive. They expect to have the boat in production by the new year and available by spring. Bungard hinted that more boats will be offered with the Flex Drive system. We can’t wait to get it on the water.

“Thank God my dad wasn’t a podiatrist,” jokes Ric about following in the footsteps of a famous outdoor writer. After graduating from Radford University and serving two years in Russia with the Peace Corps, Ric returned to Virginia Beach and started writing for The Fisherman magazine, where his dad was editor. When the kayak fishing scene exploded, Ric was among the first to get onboard. His 2007 book, The Complete Kayak Fisherman is one of the first tomes to introduce anglers to paddle fishing and hundreds of articles and seminars have brought countless anglers into the fold. When he’s not chasing every fish that swims, Ric teaches English at a school for at-risk teens.
